September Yard of the Month Winners

I would like to begin with saying “Congratulations” to this years Yard of the Month winners.  You have made my task of selecting Yard of the Month winners much easier.   While not everyone can be awarded Yard of the Month, I do want to comment on what I look for when making my selections.   Perfection is not expected, but these are the primary elements I look for or notice:

  • Grass that is thick, edged within last few weeks, and mostly weed free
  • Shrubs that have been trimmed within last few weeks
  • Flower beds that are mostly weed free
  • At least one decent sized tree that has been pruned in last month or so
  • Some interesting design elements and/or balance
  • At least some small splash of color
  • Consistency and continual improvement from previous months

In my judging process, I do avoid repeat Yard of the Month winners from the previous year, so if you have a beautiful yard and got an award last year, please keep up the hard work and assume you’ll be noticed next year.  For those of you that have been working hard  to improve your yard but were not selected, keep up the hard work as often just one or two minor things make a difference.  So go ahead and replace that dead shrub, prune that tree, sprinkle some fertilizer/weed control on the grass, plant a new tree, add a decorative border around your flower beds, or put a flower pot with a few colorful plants by the door.  That might be all that’s needed to be selected.  I have really enjoyed seeing the results of the hard work being done.  Thanks for making your yards and our neighborhood beautiful.

Below are my selections for the September Yards of the Month and with these selections we conclude our 2014 Yard of the Month program sponsored by Calloway’s Nursery.   Winners receive a $25 Calloway’s gift card.

Up next are the Halloween and Holiday decorating contests.  Judging dates/times will be posted a few weeks in advance.   I would like to request assistance with the judging for these decorating contests along with Yard of the Month for 2015.  If you are interested, please contact me.
